If the Final Hearing Bundle (Trial Bundle) contains a large number of documents there may, in addition, be a Core Bundle. A Core Bundle for a Final Hearing is a cut-down version of the full Final Hearing eBundle containing just key documents for ease of reference. So every document in the Core Bundle will also be in the Final Hearing eBundle but most documents in the Final Hearing Bundle will not be in the Core Bundle.
In some appeal tribunals, such as the Supreme Court, the phrase "Core Bundle" is used for a bundle which is a bundle in its own right- it is not a cut-down version of some other bundle. If there is a cut-down version it is instead called a "Key Documents Bundle". A bundle, however titled, which is a bundle in its own right is produced in the normal way. This article is only about making a cut-down version of an existing bundle, the key difference being that a cut-down version will include page numbers from the original bundle.
Add the #CoreBundle tag to the documents to be included in the Core Bundle.
Upload a replacement Title Page for the Core Bundle by tapping Choose Title Page to Upload in the Generate options
Regenerate the eBundle specifying the Generate with page labels and Generate with #CoreBundle tags options then OCR and download.
The index in the core bundle has the original page numbers.
Each page in the Core Bundle has the original page number imprinted.
When typing in a page number to the PDF viewer, the effect depends on the option you have selected. If you have selected the Use Logical Page Numbers (or similar) option then when you type in a page number it will take you to the page which had that page number in the original bundle. If you have not selected Use Logical Page Numbers then when you type in a page number it will take you to that page number within the Core Bundle.
Make a copy of the original bundle PDF naming it e.g. Smith - Core Bundle - hearing 11 Oct 2024.pdf
Using PDF X-Change Editor, open the Core Bundle PDF and check whether bookmarks already include page numbers. If they do not, add page numbers. To do this using PDF X-Change Editor tap Bookmarks - Add Text and, in the Add Text to Bookmark Title panel, enter p.%[Page] followed by a space in the Add Prefix box and tap OK.
Delete the Title Page and Index pages.
In the bookmarks pane select the documents which will NOT be included in the Core Bundle. You can select one document at a time or a series of documents. For each selection Right-click and choose Sections - Remove, to remove the pages, then tap Delete, to remove the selected bookmarks themselves.
When you have completed the select/remove/delete process for all documents which are NOT to be included in the Core Bundle, create a Title Page document using Word. It will be similar to the Title Page in the original bundle but within the tramlines it will say CORE BUNDLE etc. Insert the title page as the first page in the Core Bundle.
Use Bookmarks - Build Table of Contents to create a table of contents from the bookmarks, selecting the Output page numbers as - Original Page Numbers. Choose insert TOC before page 2 to insert the Index page(s) just after the Title Page.
If the PDF has any logical page numbers (page labels) for the original page numbers they may now be incorrect (if depends how they were defined and the effect of deleting pages on them). If there are logical page numbers and they are all correct, leave them, but if they are now incorrect they should all be deleted to avoid confusion.
Save the Core Bundle PDF.
The index in the Core Bundle has the original page numbers (on the left) and the page number within the Core Bundle (on the right).
Each page in the Core Bundle has the original page number imprinted.
