EMLs - Renaming EML files using ReNamer on a Windows computer

You can use ReNamer on a Windows computer to rename EML email files into this format:

2014-02-15   Email at 15.32 from John Smith to Paul Jones

1. Start ReNamer - available from http://www.den4b.com/

2. Click on Settings and enter Meta Tags settings as shown below, and click Save.

3. Click and drag the EML files into the lower half of the ReNamer panel. The main panel should then look something like the picture below

4. Click Add, select Replace and enter the information as shown in the panel below.

Then click the Add Rule bar. The panel will then show the new names in red:

Click the green Rename button to carry out the rename.

5. If there are any emails where the sender name is absent (i.e. only a sender address, not a sender name) or where the recipient name is absent, then there will be a blank in the file name (you can see an example of this in the panel above). Any such blanks need to be replaced by the email address (as the next best thing if the name is not available). To do this, add a further rule: click Add, select Replace and and enter the information as shown in the panel below. Note that there should be two spaces between from and to in the Find box.

Then click the Add Rule bar. The panel will then show the new names in red:

Click the green Rename button to carry out the rename.

6. If you happen to know the actual names of the senders or recipients where only the email address is shown then you can rename accordingly. For example, if you know that jjenkins@gmail.com is James Jenkins and that john.smith@gmail.com is John Smith, you can add a rule like this:

Click the Add Rule bar. The panel will then show the new names in red:

Click the green Rename button to carry out the rename.
